Neck pain can develop from a wide variety of causes, ranging from poor posture to trauma, to stress and work ergonomics.
In the modern world, we have a habit of spending hours in front of screens, often leading to postural imbalances caused by consistently leaning the head forward, otherwise known as “tech neck”. This places extra strain on the cervical spine and can lead to stiffness, muscle tension, pain and discomfort.
Sudden movements of the neck, such as those experienced in a car accident (whiplash), can overstretch or damage your muscles, ligaments and joints. If untreated, this may result in chronic pain, reduced mobility, or headaches.
Herniated or degenerative cervical discs can cause neck pain and may compress the nearby nerves, leading painful sensations in the arms, tingling or numbness, which is a condition known as cervical radiculopathy.
Staying in prolonged static positions, frequent phone or computer use, or jobs requiring repetitive neck movement (like construction workers, manufacturing jobs or hairdressing) can lead to muscle overuse and inflammation over time, otherwise known as a repetitive strain injury.
Sleeping in an awkward position, or using a pillow that is unsupportive, can leave your neck feeling stiff or sore in the morning. Over time, this can aggravate existing musculoskeletal conditions, or in worst cases, cause them.
Neck pain can present itself in various ways depending on the underlying cause. Some of the most common symptoms we see at the clinic are:
If you notice persistent symptoms lasting more than a few days, or worsening pain, it’s best to seek professional medical help early to prevent further complications.
At Ludgate Clinic, we take a multidisciplinary approach to treating neck pain. Each treatment plan is customised to your individual needs, combining manual therapy, rehabilitative exercise and practical advice to promote long-term recovery and reduce your pain, helping you regain your mobility and confidence.
Our osteopaths use hands-on techniques such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and localised muscle stretching to reduce your tension and restore balance. Osteopathy assesses the spine, the shoulders and your posture to treat the root cause, not just the symptoms.
Physiotherapists at Ludgate Clinic focus on functional rehabilitation, using techniques such as trigger point therapy, spinal mobilisation and guided strength exercises. Physiotherapy treatment often includes advice and home exercise programs to support your recovery between sessions, allowing you to continue on the road to recovery even when you’re not in the clinic.
Massage therapy can be incredibly effective for releasing chronic muscle tension, improving circulation and accelerating tissue healing. Ideal for tension-related neck pain.
Our team provides practical workplace ergonomics guidance, helping you adjust your desk setup, computer height and daily habits to prevent recurrence. We also offer advice on pillow choice and sleeping position.
For clients interested in long-term posture correction and flexibility, our online yoga and Pilates classes are excellent accompaniments to hands-on therapy. These sessions are designed to build your core strength, improve spinal alignment and reduce stress levels.
Neck pain should not be ignored, especially if the painful symptoms have persisted for a while. You should seek treatment for your neck pain if:
Early intervention can prevent minor issues from developing into long-term major conditions.

Osteopathy offers a hands-on, manual therapy approach to the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries using mobilisation and stretches, deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy and myofascial release to restore the health of muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.
As the treatment involves massage and stretching techniques you may need to remove some outer layers of clothing such as shirt, jumper or trousers. If you are suffering from low back pain or leg pain you may wish to bring shorts or loose trousers to change into. Women suffering from back and upper limb pain may wish to wear a vest top.
Your initial consultation involves the osteopath or physiotherapist taking a full medical history, treatment notes are then also taken at subsequent visits. Medical histories are kept on our secure practice software in accordance with data protection and the code of practice set out by The General Osteopathic Council and The Chartered Society of Physiotherapists. Medical history and treatment notes are not disclosed to any third party such as General Practitioners or health insurance providers without the permission of the patient.
Osteopaths and physiotherapists are trained as primary healthcare practitioners and patients can seek treatment without referral. If necessary you will be advised to see your GP or you may be referred for further investigations such x-ray or MRI. Please note most Health Insurance companies ask that you contact your GP before seeking treatment.
