Symptoms of Knee Pain

Knee pain can present in several ways, depending on the structure involved. Common symptoms include:

If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, a physiotherapy assessment can help determine the cause and guide your recovery.

Our Approach to Knee Pain

At Ludgate Clinic, our approach to knee pain is centred on expert assessment, patient education, and treatment tailored to your specific needs.

We start with a thorough one-to-one consultation to understand the history of your pain, any sports or occupational demands, and your personal goals. We’ll assess how you move, test joint function and strength, and also identify any contributing factors such as poor biomechanics or muscle imbalances.

Based on our findings, we’ll build a bespoke treatment plan that may include:

We aim to not only relieve your symptoms but also restore function, prevent re-injury, and improve overall movement quality.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

At your first appointment, your physiotherapist will take a short medical history and ask about your symptoms and circumstances. They’ll assess the knee joint, the surrounding muscles, and your movement patterns to identify the cause of your pain. You’ll receive a diagnosis, a tailored treatment plan, and usually hands-on treatment in the first session. We’ll also give you exercises to support your recovery. Most individuals we see at the clinic feel a positive change from the very first visit. Our team is here to support you every step of the way.

Sports Injuries and Knee Pain

Knee injuries are extremely common in sport, especially in activities involving sudden direction changes such as football, rugby, Tennis and long-distance running. Our physiotherapists have extensive experience treating athletes and active individuals recovering from a wide variety of sports injuries and knee pain.

Whether you’re returning to sport after surgery or managing an ongoing issue, we’ll help you regain strength, confidence, and performance through structured, progressive rehab.

Our goal is to help you return to the activities that matter most, whether that’s running a marathon, walking to work without persistent pain, or simply climbing stairs with confidence.

We focus on long-term recovery, not just quick fixes. That means helping you understand your injury, build resilience through progressive rehab and reduce the risk of recurrence with better movement patterns and strength.

We believe in active treatment, clear communication, and empowering you with the tools to manage your body beyond the clinic.

Answers to Common Questions

Is the treatment right for me?

Please call us and arrange to speak to an Osteopath or Physiotherapist if you are unsure about the nature of your injury or what treatment would be right for you. If treatment is not deemed appropriate there will be no charge made for your appointment.

What does the treatment involve?

Osteopathy offers a hands-on, manual therapy approach to the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal injuries using mobilisation and stretches, deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy and myofascial release to restore the health of muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints.

What should I wear?

As the treatment involves massage and stretching techniques you may need to remove some outer layers of clothing such as shirt, jumper or trousers. If you are suffering from low back pain or leg pain you may wish to bring shorts or loose trousers to change into. Women suffering from back and upper limb pain may wish to wear a vest top.

How is my medical data stored?

Your initial consultation involves the osteopath or physiotherapist taking a full medical history, treatment notes are then also taken at subsequent visits. Medical histories are kept on our secure practice software in accordance with data protection and the code of practice set out by The General Osteopathic Council and The Chartered Society of Physiotherapists. Medical history and treatment notes are not disclosed to any third party such as General Practitioners or health insurance providers without the permission of the patient.

Do I need to see my GP first?

Osteopaths and physiotherapists are trained as primary healthcare practitioners and patients can seek treatment without referral. If necessary you will be advised to see your GP or you may be referred for further investigations such x-ray or MRI. Please note most Health Insurance companies ask that you contact your GP before seeking treatment.
